Apple Of My Eye are playing as guest act at TOOTING FOLK shortly after the release of their new album, Seven Tides.  The Apples are a 6-piece folk band with guitars, mandolins, violins, harmonicas, double bass, lots of voices and more! Originally from Bristol but now London-based, their music is a blend of influences drawn from English folk and storytelling, using intriguing, lyrically rich songs with multi-part vocal harmonies and traditional folk instruments.  Folk Radio UK says of the new album “It’s a work of considerable wit and imagination, built on their core strengths, blending some very fine playing with the exceptional use of their massed voices, to create something totally unique, quite unlike anything else you’ll hear this year. It is of course also beautifully arranged and recorded, put together with such skill that everything seems so perfectly in its place.”

December’s TOOTING FOLK sees the hosts’ band play as the featured act! With a lineup reminiscent of an old-time string band, The Bara Bara Band consists of Rupert and Ruth on guitar and banjo, plus Boris on fiddle and Will on cajon. They play a mix of their own songs, traditional British songs and old-time American tunes. The band will be releasing their debut album in February 2015.

The Carrivick Sisters are one of the UK’s top young bluegrass and folk acts. Twins Laura and Charlotte perform their original songs and instrumentals along with a few carefully chosen covers on guitar, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, and clawhammer banjo.

Since their formation at university in late 2010, five-piece folk band The Coach House Company are rapidly becoming known for their uplifting and wholesome sound through dynamic live performances in London and Cambridge. Inspired by the folk heritage of the British Isles, the band fuses traditional jigs, reels and folksongs with rich harmonies, instrumental virtuosity and compelling upbeat rhythms to create a unique folk expression. Original compositions and arrangements form the core of the band’s repertoire, which is also infused with influences from the classical and jazz domains.

The band is made up of Maya Amin-Smith (vocals/violin/mandolin), Patrick Milne (vocals/guitar), Héloïse Werner (vocals/cello), Marianne Schofield (vocals/double bass) and Colin Danskin (vocals/trumpet). The Coach House Company have recently performed at, amongst others, TV Nights at Ronnie Scott’s, the ADC Theatre in Cambridge, where they were described as ‘musically excellent’ in a five-star review from Varsity. 2014 saw the band undertake a solo performance at Cecil Sharp House, where their debut EP was launched.

Old-time/bluegrass group featuring Hubert, Bruno and Sam from the acclaimed Bluegrass/Irish fusion band Lands End, and Dan Edwards who is well-known for his superb guitar and clawhammer work with bands such as The So Last Century String Band, Solid Gone, Amy Harrison & The Second Hand String Band and most recently with Ben Paley’s Long Hill Ramblers.

The Lords of Thyme are a contemporary folk group from Northampton, formed after ex-Circulus members Joe Woolley, Tali Trow and Pat Keneally decided to make a record together. Now bolstered by the pristine voice of folk songstress Michelle Griffiths, the Lords are an emerging force on the live scene. Their appearance at TOOTING FOLK is the first show of a UK tour.

With his resonant, classic English-folk voice, South London-based songwriter Stuart Forester writes perceptive, narrative-rich folk songs that will stick in your head. He accompanies his singing with guitar and a bit of mountain dulcimer and will be joined by Carol Anderson on fiddle. His recently released album, A Yard Of Ale, has received excellent reviews.
